How to use i-CAN

Basic Operation

Operation panel displayed in the operation window for i-CAN.

1. Obtain a permission.
   • If you do not have a reservation, click "Operate i-CAN as a guest user."
   • If you have a reservation, click "Login."
2. Choose an object (constellation, moon, or planet) you want to see and obtain its location.
   • You can change the indicated altitude and azimuth.
   • You can directly enter the name of constellation that is not on the list.
3. Click "GO" to move the camera.
4. Move the camera with operation buttons and enjoy the celestial journey!

Notes for Operation

• i-CAN
  1. There is a time lag before movie appears.
     Movie on the Internet is played after a certain volume of data is received in order to avoid interruption of imaging. Time lag of several tens of seconds may occur in some conditions of the network. Please be patient even you cannot receive immediate response. Move on to the next operation after getting the response from the i-CAN operation window.
  2. Indicated time is an estimated remaining time.
     Your computer calculates the remaining time based on the closing time provided by the server. If the clock of your computer does not function properly, erroneous remaining time will be indicated. You should adjust the clock regularly to keep correct time.
  3. Operation as a guest user may be interrupted.
     Reservation for educational use takes precedence over guest use. Even when it is reserved by someone, you can use i-CAN if the operation has not been started yet. However, the guest use is cut forcibly when the reserved operation starts.

• Browser
  1. View the images in a sufficiently large window.
     The window size for image viewing is designed for 1024x768. The window size for i-CAN operation is 960x640.
  2. Enable JavaScript.
     JavaScript is necessary to open the operation window and indicate the remaining time for operation right. When JavaScript is disabled, the page may not be displayed properly.
  3. Restrict cache functions.
     When operation page is cached by the browser, the page may not be opened properly. Therefore, cache functions should be restricted as much as possible. The procedure for restricting cache functions with Internet Explorer is as follows.

     (i) Choose Internet Properties from Tools of Internet Explorer.

     (ii) Click Settings of Temporary Internet files in the dialog box.

     (iii) Select Every visit to the page (shown on the top) from the list for Check for newer versions of stored pages (encircled in green).

     (iv) In addition, if your computer is connected to the Internet via proxy server, you are recommended to minimize the disk space at Amount of disk space to use (encircled in purple) in Temporary Internet files.

     Click OK to close the dialog box and complete the setting.

• RealPlayer

  Download free RealPlayer

  1. Install RealPlayer
     i-CAN is a system to obtain "real-time movie" transmitted from the network camera by remote control. RealPlayer is necessary for operation. If RealPlayer has not been installed in your computer, click the right icon and download free RealPlayer.
  2. Step-by-step procedure is given below for users who cannot browse real-time movie for security reason (often happen in schools with high-level internet security).
     

     (i) Start RealPlayer
     

     (ii) Select Tools and then Preferences.
     

     Select Network Transports from Category in the dialog box.
     
     Check Manually configure connection settings and click RTSP Settings.

     (iv) Check Attempt to use HTTP for all content at the bottom, and uncheck the other boxes.
     
     Click OK to close the dialog box. Setting has now been completed.
